Aubrey Beardsley's Yellow Book No. 5 (rejected) design, circa 1900

Sale price¥55,000

This design was created as part of the fifth issue of The Yellow Book in 1895, but was not adopted in the aftermath of the Oscar Wilde incident that occurred that same year. This work, which depicts a young girl and the faun Pan, can be seen as an adaptation of "The Mysterious Rose Garden," which Beardsley had published in the previous issue, No. 4 of The Yellow Book.
When Beardsley died in 1898, a collection of his works was produced by John Lane, the publisher of Beardsley's masterpiece "Salome." This work is a print included in the John Lane edition.
