Aubrey Beardsley, "I kissed thy mouth, Jokanaan," first published in 1899
The work is a rendition of Oscar Wilde's play Salome, which Beardsley contributed to the British art magazine The Studio in 1893.
The film depicts a shocking climax scene in which Salome kisses the severed head of Jokanaan (John) placed on a silver tray.
The painting is filled with extremely decorative curves and symbols, and the contrast between black and white leaves a dramatic impression.
The French line "J'ai baisé ta bouche, Iokanaan (I kissed your mouth, Iokanaan)" is repeated twice, quietly echoing Salome's pathos and tragedy.
This work has a different composition from the illustrations in the first English edition of Salome, which was later produced with Wilde's official approval, and because the rights were owned by the magazine The Studio, it was not reused in the official edition, but was redrawn and given a new composition.
After Beardsley's death in 1898, this work was included in a memorial collection in 1899 by John Lane, the same publisher that published Beardsley's masterpiece, Salome, and its unusual beauty was once again appreciated.
