Aubrey Beardsley "Atalanta" circa 1900 Lineblock
Atalanta is a swift female hunter from Greek mythology.
Known as the subject of numerous mythological paintings and sculptures, Beardsley portrayed her with simple, sophisticated and decorative beauty.
In this work, Atalanta is depicted standing quietly with a bow in her hand, positioned on a vertically long screen. Flowers and trees are drawn around her, and the contrast between the black of the background and the white of the figure creates a strong impression.
The thin, graceful lines, restrained composition, and subtle gestures create the tension and poetic atmosphere that is so characteristic of Beardsley.
After Beardsley died at a young age in 1898, a memorial collection of his works was produced by John Lane Publishing, the publisher of his masterpiece, Salome, and this work was included in it.
This is an original antique print produced at that time.
