Aubrey Beardsley, "Decorative Illustration: Salome and Two Attendants", c.1900, Lineblock
A small ornamental panel at the end of the book "Salome" - "Ornamental Panel: Salome and Two Attendants."
The story ends with King Herod ordering Salome's murder, which is carried out by his soldiers.
However, Beardsley goes beyond the end of the story and quietly depicts Salome's life after death.
The naked body of Salome lies in a coffin decorated with roses.
On the left is a clown-like figure dressed in black, and on the right is a horned faun-like being carrying a coffin.
Salome's hair is intricately curled, and her white body, bare of clothing, accentuates the stillness of death.
Salome after death, carried by strange attendants.
There is an air of immorality, emptiness, and sadness, with no hope of salvation.
Beardsley coolly crystallized decadence and tragedy as absurd beauty.
Although it is a small piece, it is an impressive piece that symbolizes the entire worldview of "Salome."
This is an original antique print produced at that time.
After Beardsley's early death in 1898, a collection of his works was produced by John Lane, who published a number of works including his masterpiece, Salome.
This work is one of the prints included in the John Lane edition.
