Artwork Description
The most famous illustration from "Salome" is "The Peacock's Hem."
Salome stands quietly, bewitching her beauty, her dress adorned with lavish peacock feathers.
In front of her is Herodias, smiling faintly, and there is an invisible tension between the two of them.
The peacock is a symbol of vanity and pride.
Beardsley painted the feathers with a geometric rhythm, enhancing their intricate decorativeness reminiscent of Eastern art, particularly Japonism .
The sharply drawn thin lines, repeated curves, and the tension and flowing elegance of the work are strongly reminiscent of Japanese folding screen paintings and decorative arts.
"The Peacock's Hem" is synonymous with Beardsley's art, a masterpiece that demonstrates the height of beauty achieved through line drawing.
This is an original antique print produced at that time.
After Beardsley's early death in 1898, a collection of his works was produced by John Lane, who published a number of works including his masterpiece, Salome.
This work is one of the prints included in the John Lane edition.
