Aubrey Beardsley, Perseus, c.1900, line block (from an unfinished panel painting)
Aubrey Beardsley's "Perseus," known as an unfinished panel painting.
This work is one of Beardsley's posthumous works, who died young in 1898, and was included in a retrospective art collection published by John Lane & Co. around 1900.
The painting depicts Perseus, a hero from Greek mythology.
The naked young man stands silently with Medusa's head at his feet and a sword and shield in his hands. Sword-like plants grow in the background, giving the whole scene a sense of tension and poetic decorativeness.
A long, decorative panel has also been inserted at the top of the screen, and the gestures and positioning of the figures suggest a composition reminiscent of a scene from a classical play.
It is a work that skillfully combines sharp lines and symbolic motifs, and although it was never completed, it strongly conveys Beardsley's distinctive stylized beauty and the foreboding of death.
This is an original antique print produced at that time.
