Aubrey Beardsley, "Salome's Makeup (1907 version)", c.1900, line block
"Salome's Makeup" is an illustration created for the first edition of "Salome" in 1894 but was not included in the edition, and was newly included in the reprint edition in 1907.
Unlike the first edition of 1894, this new version features a more refined structure and a sense of quiet tension.
In the center of the screen, Salome is quietly applying makeup while gazing into the mirror.
The background features Beardsley's signature geometric patterns and plant designs, giving the entire space an air of restrained decorative beauty.
The lines are thinner and sharper, the compositions more precise.
This work is a work in which a hint of quiet madness and tragedy creeps into the midst of splendor.
While alluding to Salome's fate, the painting reflects Beardsley's refined aesthetic sense in his later years.
The influence of Oriental art, especially Japonism, is also evident.
The way the white space is used and the tension that permeates the composition seem to resonate with Japanese painting.
This is an original antique print produced at that time.
After Beardsley's early death in 1898, a collection of his works was produced by John Lane, who published a number of works including his masterpiece, Salome.
This work is one of the prints included in the John Lane edition.
