Leonetto Cappiello "Japanese Star Sadayakko" Published in Lille magazine in 1900
1900, Paris World's Fair.
Sadayakko Kawakami, an actress visiting from Japan, appeared in the scene "The Geisha and the Samurai" at the Loie Fuller Theatre, captivating audiences with her exotic beauty.
This film, "Japanese Star Sadayakko," depicts her as a young Leonetto Cappiello.
The gorgeous kimono, the flowing sleeves, and the graceful elegance on Sadayakko's face.
The charm of Japonism as seen through a Western perspective is expressed with Cappiello's unique, light-hearted brushwork.
This piece was published on the back cover of the September 13, 1900 issue of the French satirical magazine Le Rire.
Even today, it is extremely rare for a complete copy to remain, making this an extremely valuable document with all 16 pages intact.
This is an original antique print (magazine) produced at that time.
