Cassandre "Pivot Aperitif" postcard (postmarked 1926)
This postcard is based on the advertising poster for an aperitif, "Pivolo Aperitif," created by Art Deco master Adolphe Mouron-Cassandre.
The geometrically deformed circle, triangle, and ◇ shape of a magpie dipping its beak into the red liquid in a wine glass is a masterpiece that beautifully combines humor and sophistication. The compositional beauty that is unique to Cassandre, including the typography, shines through.
The bird depicted is a magpie, a pun on the word "Pivolo," from "Pie vole haut" (the magpie flies high).
The back of the postcard bears the postmark " Nancy, Meurthe-et-Moselle, 1926," along with a 30¢ French stamp, making it a one-of-a-kind piece that conveys the atmosphere of the time it was actually used. It is a rare antique postcard that is appealing both as an art piece and as a reference.
