Jules Cheret "Musée Grevin" (from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche)
Behind the glamorous stage lies another drama...
"Musée Grévin" by Jules Chéret (1836-1932) was created as an advertisement for the play "Les Coulisses de l'Opéra" (Behind the Scenes of the Opera), which was performed at the Musée Grévin, a wax museum that was the talk of Paris at the time.
Using the three primary colors red, blue, and yellow, the piece depicts the moment when the ballet dancers emerge from the wings with graceful movements. The lemon yellow costume worn by the leading lady is particularly eye-catching, as if she were bathed in the spotlight on stage.
This work was included in the lithograph collection "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche" in 1896, and has a blind stamp (embossed) by the publisher in the lower right corner. This masterpiece in portrait format encapsulates the essence of Cheret's poster art.
