Alphonse Mucha "Gismonda" 1898 Antique postcard
It all began here: Mucha and Sarah Bernhardt, the beginning of a legend.
At the end of 1894, the unknown Alphonse Mucha hastily created a stage poster for "Gismonda," which caused a sensation as soon as it was put up on the streets of Paris, catapulting Mucha to the status of a star of his time. This work, based on that original drawing, is a postcard that symbolizes a turning point in the history of theater and art.
Gismonda, played by Sarah Bernhardt, is depicted walking calmly in a gold and floral costume, holding a palm leaf, a symbol of victory. The vertically elongated composition, mosaic decoration, and deep colors perfectly express the fusion of divinity and the Art Nouveau style.
This postcard edition was produced for collectors by Chino Co. It is a highly valuable work that symbolizes the golden age of theater and poster art .
