Alphonse Mucha "Lorenzo" 1898 antique postcard
Mucha's unique dramatic manga depicting the aesthetics of revenge and masks.
Alphonse Mucha was an innovator of theatrical posters, and he worked with Sarah Bernhardt on numerous stage productions. This work, Lorenzaccio, is a postcard based on the stage poster for a historical drama based on a play by Alfred de Musset.
Mucha depicted the complex inner thoughts of the masked young man Lorenzo. His dark blue costume and flowing silhouette exude a sense of revenge, intrigue, and sadness. In the background, intertwined plant motifs and dragon-like decorations create a heavy stage set reminiscent of medieval Florence.
This postcard, issued at the time of a performance at the Renaissance Theatre, can be said to be a symbol of the Belle Époque, a time when theater and art were fused on a highly sophisticated level.
