Alphonse Mucha "Salome" 1902 Antique postcard (with handwritten letter)
Gifting, collecting, and recording art - a leaf conveying the beautiful customs of the late 19th century.
Alphonse Mucha's painting "Salome" is based on the theme of a biblical dancer, but with exotic costumes and graceful movements, it is a work that elevates the figure to a symbolic and enchanting female figure. The figure holding a circular frame and the delicate decoration of the costume are alive with the graceful curves unique to Art Nouveau.
The real value of this postcard lies in the handwritten note attached to its back. Written on December 17, 1902 in the village of Cordemais in western France, the message reads:
"This is to add to your collection. It's probably the first card your mother wrote, so your aunt will look back fondly on it."
In other words, this postcard is a rare testimony that tells us that the culture of "collecting postcards" already existed as early as 1902. Marie the writer concludes the postcard with "Bon souvenir à toute la famille (good memories for your whole family)," suggesting that the act of exchanging art as a gift was a completely natural part of everyday life.
They are truly memories of "living Art Nouveau," combining the perfection of works of art with the ability to document the lifestyle and culture of the time.
