Alphonse Mucha had a fateful encounter with Sarah Bernhardt, a legendary actress in Paris at the end of the 19th century, and created numerous posters and decorative works. This work is known as one of their iconic collaborations, and is a perfect fusion of her mysterious presence and Mucha's decorative art.
With her golden hair, lily crown, and jewel-like chest ornament, Sarah is gazing directly at us against a backdrop of dancing stars, like a divine being on stage. In this production in particular , the gold leaf is used lavishly, giving her a dazzling solemnity .
A French postage stamp (5 centimes) from that time is affixed to the bottom left, and it still survives with a 1907 postmark, making it historically valuable as an artistic print that was actually used and is not simply a reproduction.
This piece, which combines theater, art, and postal culture, is truly worthy of being called the crystallization of the Belle Époque.
