Sherlock Holmes "The Dancing Men" double-sided illustration (Holmes catches the culprit) / Sidney Paget (1903)
This is an illustration (printed both sides) from Arthur Conan Doyle's The Dancing Men, which was published in the July 1903 issue of The Strand Magazine. The illustration was by Sidney Paget, known as the illustrator of Sherlock Holmes, and depicts the arrest scene at the end of the story.
Scene Synopsis Holmes receives information from his friend Wilson Hargrave, who works at the New York Police Department, that Slaney is the most dangerous criminal in Chicago. After deciphering the final code, Holmes determines that the threat is ongoing and rushes to the scene with Watson.
Holmes meets up with the inspector at the scene, and confident that Slaney will not escape, he sends him a letter requesting a visit. Soon, a tall, dark-faced man with a Panama hat, a black beard, and a hooked nose strides up and rings the doorbell. Holmes carefully gives instructions to prepare for a welcome attack.
This work is a double-sided print of one page, with illustrations only on the front.
