Illustration for Sherlock Holmes' "Five Orange Peas" (Watson tells her it's too late) by Sidney Paget (1891)
"Holmes, it's too late --"
The tragedy of the incident quietly emerges from the one word spoken by Watson as he opens the newspaper.
This work is an illustration from a short story, "The Five Orange Pips," which was published in The Strand Magazine in 1891.
The silence of breakfast is interrupted by the news of his death in the newspaper that has just arrived. Holmes slowly puts down his cup and responds with a solemn look on his face to Watson's words.
Illustrator Sidney Paget captures that moment with just a few lines and shading.
This is a rare moment in the story in which Holmes regrets not having made it in time, and it is one of those famous scenes in which the emotions of the characters are quietly conveyed.
This illustration is an original that was originally cut out from The Strand Magazine; there is no illustration on the back, only text printed on it.
This is an original antique print produced at that time.

We only introduce works that you can safely add to your collection.
Natural fading and stains may appear over time, but these are also proof of the era the piece has passed through and are elements that convey the texture of the materials and techniques used to create it.
