"Observatory Fountain (Carpeaux Fountain)" 1913 Antique photo postcard of the fountain south of the Luxembourg Gardens | Framed
A symphony of sky and water supported by four continents──
This work is an antique photographic postcard from 1913 showing the Observatory Fountain (Fontaine de l'Observatoire), located south of the Luxembourg Gardens in the 6th arrondissement of Paris.
At the time, it was also known as "Carpeaux Fountain" after the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux.
The four female figures holding the globe aloft symbolize the continents of Asia, Africa, America, and Europe, and are metaphors of the power of the Earth, astronomy, and humanity. The fountains surrounding it are dynamic, and the beauty of their composition and arrangement highlights Carpeaux's sculptural talent.
This work is framed in a deep blue-green mount and black wooden frame, creating a calm finish that brings out the elegance of the water, sky, and classical sculpture. The framed size is approximately 20 x 27.5 cm.
(The address side still has the 1913 postmark, as well as some writing and stamps from that time.)
