With Notre Dame in the background, he quietly opens his book - Grasset's masterpiece depicting the fantasies and memories of romanticism
This work, "Library Romantique," is a lithograph created in 1896 by Art Nouveau master Eugène Grasset (1845-1917) and published in the same year as illustration 42 in "The Masters of the Poster."
With the Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral in the background, a woman in an elegant black dress is depicted seated in a chair, absorbed in reading. In the square frame at the bottom left of the painting, details of the literary publication "L'Âge du Romantisme (The Age of Romanticism)" are written in typography, and the composition also functions as an advertisement for the publishing company Edmond Mounier Bookstore.
Philippe Burty, one of the book's editors, is also the proponent of the term "Japonisme" to describe the Western trend in Japanese art, and the book evokes the cultural trends of late 19th century France, where Romanticism and Orientalism intersected.
A skull is placed in the bottom right of the painting, symbolically expressing books, time, memory, and the transience of art. This work, which encapsulates Grasset's fantasy and intellect, is a masterpiece that combines the poetry of Romanticism with the design beauty of Art Nouveau.
