Henri-Gabriel Hibel "Lescamouches" 1896
From a corner of Paris: A phantom poster where satire and art intersect
"L'Escarmouche" by Henri-Gabriel Ibels (1867–1936) was created as an advertising poster for the satirical weekly magazine L'Escarmouche (The Skirmish), which was first published in 1896.
With working-class men, a bar counter, and a group of soldiers visible through a window as a backdrop, Ibel depicted the everyday life of ordinary Parisians in the Belle Époque, overlapping with the unrest of the time. Ibel's friend Toulouse-Lautrec also contributed to the magazine, and together they recorded the Parisian scenes of the time in an intimate yet somewhat ironic way.
This poster has an unusual history in that due to the legal system at the time, it was not permitted to be displayed on the street, and could only be displayed indoors and sold. The magazine in which it was published, Lescamouches, ceased publication after only three months, making this a rare piece that was only published for a limited period of time.
This work is included in the lithograph collection "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche" (Masters of the Poster) and is blind stamped (embossed) by the publisher in the lower right corner.
