Toulouse-Lautrec, "Dressing Room at the Folies-Bergère", 1897, back cover of Lille magazine
Backstage in Montmartre, the female acrobat and her shadow
This work, Dressing Room at the Folies-Bergère, by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901), was published on the back cover of the French satirical magazine Le Rire in 1897, and is one in a series depicting dancers and performers backstage.
The painting depicts the acrobat Rona Balisong, one of the Balisong sisters who were popular at the time, and her manager/husband. A horse can be seen in the background, and a quiet moment between performances is captured. Toulouse-Lautrec's sharp yet light brushstrokes and skillful use of omission truly convey the "poetry of backstage."
This piece is not a single page from a booklet, but a rare surviving copy of the original paper that was issued as a back cover and has been linen-lined.
