Toulouse-Lautrec "Jane Avril" (from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche) (former collection of the Rouen School of Fine Arts)
A dialogue between a dancer and Ukiyo-e that blossomed in the Paris night
"Jane Avril" by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) is a poster created to promote the appearance of Jane Avril, a dancer who had gained popularity at the Moulin Rouge, at the Jardin de Paris, a café-concert hall on the Champs-Élysées.
The bold composition, with the black-clad performers positioned prominently in the bottom right corner of the picture and the female dancers on stage in the distance, strongly suggests the influence of Japanese ukiyo-e, particularly Hiroshige Utagawa's "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." Avril's red dress and light steps leave a striking impression as a symbol of the Paris night scene.
This work is included in the lithograph collection "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche (Masters of the Poster)" and features a blind stamp (embossed) in the lower right corner indicating that it is an original.
This piece was formerly part of the collection of the École des Beaux-Arts de Rouen in France, and is a prestigious piece with ownership and sales stamps on the back.
