This work is an antique photographic postcard from 1905, showing the cabarets "Le Ciel" (Heaven) and "L'Enfer" (Hell), which existed side by side at 53, Boulevard de Clichy in Montmartre.
Both "Heaven" and "Hell" were themed cabarets that opened in 1896 and were run by the same owner. The building with the "LE CIEL" sign on the left is "Heaven," and the building on the right with the devil's face with its mouth open as its entrance is "Hell."
This photograph captures the relatively plain façade before it was later expanded and decorated, making it a valuable document showing the building's appearance before renovation. It is a photo that captures the charm of the building's simple yet mysterious tranquility, before it became over-the-top with stylization and decoration.
This work is framed in a dark green mount and black wooden frame. The unique architecture and fantastical production stand out in the composition, and the finished work has a dignified calm and taste. The framed size is approximately 20 x 27.5 cm.
