Elegant Belgian Symbolism: Flower-like Female Figures and the Poetics of Decoration
This work, "Cercle Artistique de Schaerbeek," is a poster by the painter Privat Livemont (1861-1936), also known as the "Belgian Mucha."
The setting is Schaerbeek, a city near Brussels, Belgium, and the painting was created to promote the 5th Art Circle Exhibition (May 6-30, 1900), which was held there.
In the painting, a woman with an elegant profile stands quietly, holding a small statue - or perhaps an illusion - in her hands. Her auburn hair, expressed with soft curves, her head decorated with ivy leaves, and the plant motif in the background all harmonize, and combine with the gold color to create a decorative world unique to Art Nouveau.
Like his French counterpart Mucha, Rivemont was known for his works that combined feminine beauty with symbols of nature, and was highly acclaimed in Belgium. This work was included and published in 1900 as image 212 in "The Masters of Posters (Les Maîtres de l'Affiche)."
