Alphonse Mucha "Gismonda" (from Les Affiches Illustrées)
🌿 A mysterious crown blooms on the stage at the end of the century──
Alphonse Mucha's Gismonda was his breakthrough work and is a symbolic piece that heralded the beginning of Art Nouveau.
This work, which Mucha is said to have completed in one night in response to an urgent request for a stage poster at the end of 1894, was put up on the wall of the Renaissance Theatre on January 1, 1895, and was highly praised by the star, Sarah Bernhardt herself. The play, Gismonda, was a play by playwright Victorien Sardou, and the oriental costume and the figure of the actress holding a palm branch attracted the attention of the audience.
This work is a Les Affiches Illustrées edition, a small, decorative version of a lithograph issued for collectors in 1896. Its delicate botanical motifs, vertical composition, and decorative lettering are a condensed version of the beauty of Art Nouveau.

Natural fading and stains may appear over time, but these are also proof of the era the piece has passed through and are elements that convey the texture of the materials and techniques used to create it.
