Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 3, Chapter 3] (both sides No. 121 & 122)
At the end of her long journey, Ilse finally has a fateful reunion. Lying on a bed wrapped in white lilies is a young man with "eyes like the sea" who has occupied her heart since time immemorial. Even with her eyes closed, Ilse says she knows his face for sure. As the boundary between dream and reality becomes blurred, she quietly declares, "This is my friend," and refuses to let anyone touch him.
Work Description
In this scene, Ilse's inner world and external reality overlap, and the story moves towards a fantastical climax. The illustration on page 121 delicately depicts Ilse lying drowsily surrounded by flowers, and poetically describes the "sleeping young man" as a symbol of her love and dreams. On page 122, Ilse describes his gaze as "deep and gentle like the sea," and is impressed by the scene where she says she knew his soul even though she had never met him in person.
Surrounded by the plant motifs characteristic of Art Nouveau, these illustrations visually symbolize love, destiny, and the bond between souls that transcends time. In particular, the string of ritornello-like flowers in the lower section alludes to the flow of time and the cycle of life, showing that this work is not merely a love story, but also has mythological and symbolic depths.
As we read these pages, we are guided through Ilse's perspective and feel as if we are witnessing the end of a dream.
This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.

Natural fading and stains may appear over time, but these are also proof of the era the piece has passed through and are elements that convey the texture of the materials and techniques used to create it.
