Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 3, Chapter 3] (both sides No. 125 & 126)

Sale price¥44,000

Standing before the body of the knight Jaufre, Ilse takes the veil of flowers in her hands with a calm look on her face.
It was a cloth saturated with the flowers of her love - wild roses and violets, and the fragrance of prayer.
In each and every one of them, she put the feelings she had been nurturing even while she was far away.

Work Description

This scene depicts the final stage of the story, when Ilse, who is present at the death of the knight Jauffre, quietly gazes upon his body and covers it with flowers.
Ilse's account of the origins of the flowers is impressive: they were planted and cultivated by her own hands.
Far across the Mediterranean Sea, the flowers continued to bloom quietly, as if in response to his soul.

The illustration depicts a delicate depiction of a reclining knight surrounded by blooming flowers and women at his side.
The border motifs, consisting of doves and acanthus-style plants, symbolically highlight the themes of death and rebirth, love and devotion.

Ilse's narration is poetry itself, and the final line, "The flowers have a voice -- a distant, quiet, solemn voice -- and I obeyed it,"
It is a fitting conclusion to this story, one that conveys the power of inner faith and love.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
