Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 1, Chapter 2] (both sides, No. 17 & 18)

Sale price¥110,000

A prayer from youth floats in the silence.
It is not words but the wind, the light, and the scent of flowers that stir the soul.
What is faith, what is love?
Like a deep forest, unanswered questions fill Jaufre's heart.

Work Description

This work is an illustration that appears in Part 1, Chapter 2 of "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli," depicting a scene in which the young boy Jaufre is having a conversation with an elderly nobleman.
In quiet conversations about prayer and faith, Jaufre's sensitivity to finding the sacred in nature becomes apparent.

In No. 17, the curves typical of Art Nouveau spread across the entire frame, intertwining floral and bird motifs, visually expressing the mystery of the "flowers nurtured by an invisible hand."
The theme of this scene is the invisible feelings contained in the flowers and the unspoken forms of prayer, and the intricacy of the decoration enhances the quiet depth of the scene.

In the decoration of No. 18, the squirrel and leaves overhead symbolize the lush forest, while the female figure with the word "VERITAS (truth)" engraved on her chest suggests a "revelation from nature" that goes beyond words.
An embroidered strip runs down the center, lending a decorative rhythm to the scene.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
