Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 1, Chapter 2] (both sides, No. 19 & 20)

Sale price¥38,500

Flames aren't the only thing that lights up a winter night.
The rustling of the forest, the alignment of the stars, and the pages of a book ignite a fire deep within a young soul.
In Part 1, Chapter 2, the protagonist Jaufre's inner world is told alongside magnificent descriptions of nature.
This scene, full of tranquility and lyricism, shows us a kind of "chivalry" that is found not on the battlefield, but in books and contemplation.

Work Description

This scene is a striking chapter that highlights Jaufre’s intelligence and sensitivity in the story.
The back of a young man gazing at the starry sky and the image of the mystical goddess-like Évangile poetically bring to light themes such as religion and nature, and the desire for mystery and knowledge.

Jaufre is depicted as a man devoted to learning, finding beauty and truth in the movements of the stars and mystical symbols, and, as symbolized by his words "the forest is my penitent friend" (ma pénitente amie), nature speaks to him like a book, from which he draws wisdom and solace.

In the narrative of this chapter, the visual role played by Mucha's decorations cannot be overlooked. Astronomical symbols and botanical motifs are woven into the illustrations, and they function as "pictures to be read" that resonate with the text. This composition is an element that highlights the poetic and symbolic worldview of the book as a whole, and can be said to be one of the achievements that Mucha reached in visual art.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
