Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 1, Chapter 2, last] (both sides, No. 25 & 26)

Sale price¥88,000

The name does not exist. Or perhaps it is so far away and inaccessible that it exists as the essence of beauty.
The being spoken of in the dream was something beyond all earthly knowledge. It was a "she" that could not be described in words.
When poetry and music intersect, an illusion like a smile from the soul appears out of silence.

Work Description

This scene marks the climax of Chapter 2 of Part 1, depicting the moment when the narrator Jaufre's inner fantasy and the source of his artistic inspiration merge into one. The "she" who resides in his heart is not a real woman, but a nameless transcendental being - a symbol of poetry, music, dreams and ideals.

In the illustration, a man playing a lyre and a nude woman reclining as if responding to the sound of the lyre are depicted, symbolizing the unity of music and illusion. A series of delicate eye motifs at the top suggest inner insight and the visualization of dreams. Flying birds at the bottom suggest the flight of a free soul or the spread of artistic inspiration.

This page symbolically represents the underlying themes of "longing for the invisible" and "the mystery of art" that run throughout "Ilse," and is filled with silence and lingering echoes, as if the boundary between fantasy and reality is silently dissolving.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
