Sale price¥110,000

Once a memory is lit in your mind, it will not fade away even with the changing of the seasons, and will continue to fill your heart with kindness.
On the lakeside in spring, Jaufre suddenly remembered the "nameless person" who appeared like the wind and disappeared like a flame.

Work Description

This work is an illustration based on a scene in which the protagonists Jaoufre and Eymardine discuss "what is love," and depicts one of the most poetic moments of introspection in the story. In the lower left corner of the page, a woman is depicted sitting on a flowering branch, her gaze fixed on a fantastical female figure that appears to emerge from the water. This is a visualization of Jaoufre's memories, or the image of the "ideal man" that Eymardine talks about, and is a symbolic composition in which the person from his thoughts appears dressed in the attire of nature.

The upper part of the painting is decorated with floral ornaments typical of Art Nouveau, which harmonize with the delicate flow of emotions in the story. Mucha's characteristic flowing lines and plant motifs beautifully outline the boundary between fantasy and reality.

The female figure depicted on page 38 appears as a pure and mysterious "embodiment of love," and her figure, standing in soft light, seems to speak directly to the viewer's heart. The grape-like bubbles and light that fill the screen can also be interpreted as symbolizing the liberation of emotions and the purification of the soul.

These two pages are the culmination of a poetic world that quietly yet profoundly depicts the emotional landscape that wavers as love blossoms.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
