Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 1, Chapter 4] (both sides, No. 47 & 48)

Sale price¥77,000

At dusk, Emardine wanders through her dreams, traveling between the forest, the sea, and the castle. A small blue fire gently guides her between reality and fantasy, and a distant singing voice quietly echoes in her ears.

Work Description

This work is an illustrated lithograph depicting a scene from Chapter 4 of Part 1 of "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli." In the center of the page, Emardine is depicted leaning gracefully forward, and in front of her gaze is the source of a fantastic singing voice - an "unknown singer."

Written in a poetic style, this scene highlights Emardine's delicate sensitivity and rich inner life. The silence of the forest that surrounds her, the shady paths, the emerald beach, and the "little blue flame" at sunset all symbolize the connection between nature and the spiritual world.

Also on this page, an old woman named Huguet appears, "neither deaf nor blind, but neither seeing nor hearing anything," and is quietly contrasted with her as someone who rejects the love and emotions of her youth. It can be read as a dialogue between the past and the future, experience and innocence, between Emmaldine's innocent curiosity and Huguet's silence.

This is a beautiful leaf whose gorgeous Art Nouveau decorative frame and graceful lines further accentuate the fantastical quality of the story.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
