Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 1, Chapter 4] (both sides No. 49 & 50)

Sale price¥55,000

"A vision appeared in his dreams every night - she enveloped Jaufre's gaze and heart like a sweet fragrance, and she became an inescapable presence."

As the story progresses to the fourth chapter of Part 1, Jaufre's mind is more deeply captured by the world of visions. Through his conversation with the monk, he himself begins to realize that his feelings are abnormal, but the image of the woman he imagines appears beside him like a nightly vision, then fades away and returns again. Her presence has become a sweet obsession that he can no longer shake off with faith or reason.

Explanation

Chapter 4 is a symbolic scene depicting the deepening of the "spiritual love" experienced by the protagonist Jaufre. On page 49, Jaufre denies blasphemy and continues to read the scriptures sleeplessly at night. He tries to learn "holy love," but in reality, his heart is captured by the visionary woman he once met in the forest.

On page 50, we see how the vision captivates him through all five senses. Her figure appears more vividly at night than by day, and Jaufre is surrounded by a fantastic array of scents, sounds, and colors. The line between reality and fantasy is now blurred, and his whole mind is in her service: "All thoughts and words are meaningless except for her."

This chapter resonates with Mucha's delicate and fantastical decorations, and embodies the themes of late 19th century Symbolism: love and dreams, faith and temptation, and the enchantment of the soul.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
