Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 1, Chapter 4, last] (both sides, No. 51 & 52)

Sale price¥77,000

Even after sending off a pilgrim group to the Holy Land, the angelic and innocent young man Jaffrey is torn between his faith and loneliness. A new "trial of the soul" is presented to him. His encounter with women guilty of debauchery lights a flame of "forgiveness" in his pure heart.

Work Description

The final scene of Part 1, Chapter 4, is a beautiful and symbolic episode that embodies the "love of God" that Jaffray shows to sinners. A group of Spanish prostitutes arrive accompanied by the Duke of Normandy's archers. Jaffray is shocked by their appearance, but instead of reproaching them for their sins, he offers them ointments of healing and psalms and blesses them with his own hands.

The decoration at the bottom of the page features pure white calla lilies in full bloom, visually emphasizing the theme of "purification" that runs through the story. In particular, the illustration on page 53 depicts a scene in which Jaffray kisses each person on the forehead, and together with a quote from the Gospel evoking Mary Magdalene, it quietly reaches a religious climax where "redemption," "love," and "forgiveness" overlap.

The end of this chapter is not merely a sermon, but a culmination of the ideal image of a knight in the Belle Époque and Christian charity. It is here that Jaffray first moves from "solitude of faith" to "faith in harmony with others."

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
