A group of laughing young girls walk through the forest on a sun-drenched African beach. Tropical palm leaves sway gently in the breeze, and dark green silhouettes cast shadows on the horizon. They are on their way to the sea. In their innocent conversation and playfulness, the story of Princess Ilizae begins in a new chapter.
Work Description
In this scene, which marks the beginning of the second part, the setting of the story changes and an exotic African landscape unfolds. In the pictorial decoration on page 53, young women dressed in colorful clothing appear, creating a lighter and brighter atmosphere, in stark contrast to the solemn medieval worldview of the previous pages. The central arch-shaped decoration features a dynamic group of figures with plant motifs, visually impressing the new beginning of the second part.
The main text depicts casual conversations that take place during a journey. However, the presence of Princess Irises can be felt in the background, and her love and feelings are hinted at. On page 54, the young girls praise Irises and mention the person she loves, providing subtle hints of the core of the story.
The page layout, which beautifully blends Art Nouveau-style plant decorations with the sweet tone of the story, demonstrates once again that this is not just a book with illustrations, but a comprehensive work of art that combines vision and storytelling.
This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
