Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 2, Chapter 1] (both sides, No. 55 & 56)
The laughter of girls and the golden beach stretching out in the distance.
Who would know about Ilse's tears?
The story begins with an innocent conversation between Princess Ilse and some young girls.
However, there was one person among them who was gazing beyond the waves.
Work Description
In Part 2, Chapter 1, pages 55-56, Ilse and her maids head to the beach and enjoy a brief moment of relaxation. The light-hearted conversation they have on the shore is as bright as the water reflecting the summer light, and is full of fun, like a scene from a picture book.
However, with each turn of the page, the story's shadows begin to emerge a little more.
While the girls laugh, Ilse's gaze is directed far out to the sea, suggesting that her mind is already deep in dreams.
"The roses and violets in my garden--I grew them for him."
As if to foreshadow the events to come, Ilse's sadness and quiet determination are softly depicted, almost as if mixing with the seaside breeze.
The illustrations, decorated with Art Nouveau ornaments, are at once light and melancholic, highlighting the duality that permeates the pages: innocence and sadness.
This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.

At Rivoli Antiques, we carefully select our items based on the trust we have built through many years of collaboration with museums and experts.
We only introduce works that you can safely add to your collection.
Natural fading and stains may appear over time, but these are also proof of the era the piece has passed through and are elements that convey the texture of the materials and techniques used to create it.
