Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 2, Chapter 1] (both sides No. 59 & 60)

Sale price¥44,000

A visionary scene where the boundary between dream and reality becomes blurred.
In this scene, Princess Ilse is depicted quietly watching her maids bathe.
Her gaze is filled with dignified serenity and sadness, and the story quietly delves into her inner world.

Work Description

On page 59, the mood of the innocent maids changes completely with the appearance of Ilse, sitting on the shore. Surrounded by floral motifs, her eyes are described as "so clear that the earth was not fit to look at, so cold as steel, and so full of mercy." Her presence is as if she came from beyond the realm of fantasy - her beauty and sadness quietly captivate the reader, like a mystical flower blooming at the edge of the Sahara.

On page 60, Mucha's distinctively decorative composition appears. The princess appears from between gold and purple curtains, wearing a thin white robe and depicted with the lightness of the sea's breath. On her head is a crown of opals that emits a fiery blue light, and her hair sways like seaweed - her figure seems to belong to "another world" where nature and mystery intersect.

"Only the sky meant anything to her, and all the blue of the earth was in her eyes."
This description, which concludes with this line, suggests that Ilse is not just a princess, but a spiritual being imbued with mystery and melancholy.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
