Alphonse Mucha, illustrations for "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" [Part 2, Chapter 1, Last] (both sides, No. 65 & 66)

Sale price¥66,000

Beyond the fragrant forest, a palace of dreams emerges.
The young maids open like petals,
Princess Ilse steps lightly onto the ground.
But within his heart, a nameless shadow still lurks...

Work Description

At the end of Part 2, Chapter 1, Ilse and her maids arrive at the dreamlike oasis palace. After passing through a fragrant forest, they find an elegant and "childish" palace that seems to reflect a childhood fantasy. Awaiting her is a banquet surrounded by silverware and coral decorations - but what she desires is not yet in sight.

Meanwhile, the illustration on page 65 symbolically depicts a bird with its wings outstretched, warming eggs in a nest. This could be interpreted as symbolizing the birth of a new life, or the love and anxiety for something that must be protected. Princess Ilse's whisper, "The enemies of my dreams," may not refer to an external threat, but to the contradictions and premonitions of her own destiny that are budding within her.

The beautifully decorated final chapter marks the first steps as reality slowly begins to take hold in Ilse's innocent world.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
