Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 2, Chapter 2] (both sides No. 73 & 74)

Sale price¥44,000

After the three knights announce themselves, the story finally moves to the appearance of Princess Ilse. After days of prayer and meditation, Elderius' words are spoken quietly. Then, as if in a solemn ceremony, Ilse kneels before her father - her choice will lead the story to its next stage.

Work Description

In this chapter, the first of the three knights, Elderius, talks about his past and his journey of faith. He says that he was once consumed by passion, but found peace after long periods of contemplation, and preaches that "wisdom and moderation are true happiness." His appearance gives the impression of being more like a monk than a knight, which contrasts with Ilse's fantastical vision.

The next scene (p.73) is a key turning point, as Princess Ilse finally appears. It is revealed that she uses the title of "princess" not as a sign of her true lineage, but as a means to gain the protection of the fairies, blurring the line between fantasy and reality. Her father, the lord, advises his daughter to choose a spouse from among the three knights, but in his words we also see a patriarchal figure torn between medieval feudal ethics and modern self-determination.

The decorations are also noteworthy. In the scene featuring Elderius (p.74), golden stars and geometric patterns are arranged behind him, symbolizing the "light of knowledge" and inner serenity he speaks of. Meanwhile, in the scene featuring Ilse (p.73), the composition of the scene, surrounded by a canopy and statues of saints, places her at the center of the ceremony. The figure of the princess kneeling is not merely obedient, but can also be read as a sign of active choice to be made in the story to come.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
