"Talking about France during the grape season"
Princess Ilse, in a foreign land, hears a tale of a far-western country called France. The land is a "land of melancholy" where joy and sorrow intertwine. The scenery symbolized by the grape harvest is not merely a scene of celebration, but one that encapsulates labor, silence, and the slowly rising emotions of humanity.

Work Description

In this scene, the scenery of France is described to Princess Ilse. At first, the brightness and bustle of France does not seem to fit her, and it seems rather inappropriate for the quietness and loneliness deep in her heart. However, the narrator depicts the "melancholy" and "devotion" qualities of France beneath the brightness of the exterior.

The story then shifts to the grape harvest. The workers look weary as they head off to work, working in silence and without song. But gradually the baskets fill up, songs begin to emerge, and the young people find joy once again amid the autumn flowers. Their appearance is like that of the "Goddess of the Grapes (Déesse de la vendange)."

Ilse asks, "Is France a country of riotous intoxication?" The narrator responds in the affirmative, but also hints that this is not just about pleasure, but a deep cultural sensibility that also embraces the sorrows and hopes of life.

This chapter portrays France not simply as a utopia, but as a spiritual climate that combines "joy" and "tears," "pride" and "humility," shedding new light on Ilse's spiritual journey.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
