Alphonse Mucha, "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" illustrations [Part 2, Chapter 3] (both sides No. 89 & 90)

Sale price¥132,000

A journey to a sacred place enveloped in mysterious light.
--This is a fantastical conversation between pilgrims where prayer and recollection intersect.

The story of Princess Ilse of Tripoli is nearing its end, and the stage now moves to the holy land, Jerusalem.
During the pilgrimage, people speak of the memories of the land where God once walked.
There were tears, prayers and eternal words engraved on it.

[Work description]

This illustration shows a scene from the story that runs from pages 89–90.
Pilgrims pray at the holy ground where Jesus is said to have walked.
Memories of the songs of Bethlehem and the blood on the clover in the Garden of Gethsemane arise before their eyes, and soon those emotions are quietly expressed in words.

On page 90, an old pilgrim sheds tears, and Princess Ilse asks the reason for his tears.
As he responds, "The Lord has not heard our prayers," a quiet, lingering feeling of faith and despair hangs over us.

Mucha's images combine religious symbolism with Art Nouveau decoration, imbuing them with a spirituality that transcends painting and storytelling.
In particular, the depictions of the characters on page 90, which are based on green, exude a mystical quality that seems to personify faith itself.

This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
