Alphonse Mucha, illustrations for "Ilse, Princess of Tripoli" [Part 2, Chapter 3, last] (both sides, No. 93 & 94)
Seeing off dreams and prayers on the starry seashore...
Ilse, a foreign princess, quietly bids farewell to the land of fantasy as she listens to the pilgrims' tales of God.
Work Description
At the end of Part 2, Chapter 3, the conversation between Princess Ilse and the pilgrims comes to a quiet end.
The pilgrims had finished their journey of prayer and tears, and it was time to return to France. The princess listened to their words in silence, and simply responded with a mysterious smile. The sight of the princess, riding in a palanquin pulled by a white deer and seeing them off to the shore, was like a vision blooming in a dream.
White waves litter and wash at the princess's feet as she watches the departing ship, and her gaze is directed to the distant horizon.
In the final scene, the pilgrims praise the princess's beauty and speak of her as if she were a saint. Her presence is a miracle that brings light to the paradise-like mansion, and even the sadness of their separation is sublimated into a soft, poetic sentiment.
The illustrations depict scenes overlooking the sea and the image of a compassionate princess, and Mucha's unique symbolic decorations - stars, flowers, arabesque patterns - add an elegant touch to the story. The path of dreams and prayers emerges from the decorations, intersecting with Princess Ilse's mental landscape.
This work is included in the lavishly illustrated book "Ilse of Tripoli," published in German in 1901.
