Alphonse Mucha "La Samaritaine" 1898 Antique postcard
Alphonse Mucha was a leading decorative artist in late 19th century Paris. Known for his graceful curves and symbolic female figures, Mucha created the poster for the stage production "La Samaritaine" starring actress Sarah Bernhardt.
This postcard is a print from that time based on the poster, and the geometric pattern in the background and the elegant female figure holding a water pitcher quietly convey the world of the play. The name of the theater, "Théâtre de la Renaissance," the title, and the name of the writer Edmond Rostand are also inscribed, giving a sense of the breath of an era when theater and art were fused together.
