Alphonse Mucha "Samaritan Woman" (from Les Maîtres de l'Affiche)

The Samaritan Woman by Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939) was created as a poster for the play La Samaritaine, written by Edmond Rostand and performed at the Théâtre de la Renaissance in Paris in 1897. The model was Sarah Bernhardt, a great actress of the time. With her mythical presence and elegant appearance, this is a piece that quietly draws the viewer in.
Mucha's distinctive Art Nouveau style of delicate line drawings and decorative backgrounds, and in this work in particular the use of gold ink, shine through, creating a composition full of mystery and elegance.
This work is included in "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche," a collection of high-quality lithographs for collectors published between 1896 and 1900, and features a blind stamp (embossed) in the lower right corner indicating that it is an original from the publisher.
