Photo: Aubrey Beardsley (photographed by Frederick Evans) circa 1900 from the John Lane Prints collection
This work is a portrait of the Art Nouveau genius Aubrey Beardsley.
The photograph was taken by Frederick H. Evans, a well-known photographer of the time who was also a friend of Beardsley and left one of the few portraits of him alive.
This photograph is said to have been taken in 1894, when Beardsley was around 21 years old, and was later included at the beginning of a posthumous collection of Beardsley's works published by publisher John Lane in memory of Beardsley's death from illness in 1898.
Beardsley's profile, with his head tilted slightly and his chin resting on his hand, exudes a quiet weariness as well as the intelligence that enabled him to continue observing keenly despite illness at a young age.
The artist's signature is printed at the bottom, suggesting that it was intended as a memorial piece.
This is an original antique print photograph produced at the time.

Natural fading and stains may appear over time, but these are also proof of the era the piece has passed through and are elements that convey the texture of the materials and techniques used to create it.
