This is an illustration (printed both ways) from The Red-Headed League by Arthur Conan Doyle, which appeared in the August 1891 issue of The Strand Magazine. The illustrations are by Sidney Paget, who is known for his illustrators of Sherlock Holmes.
In this scene, Dr. Watson visits Holmes while he is consulting with his client, Jabez Wilson. The illustration shows Wilson searching for a newspaper advertisement for the Red Heads' League.
The back of the title page is another piece published in Strand Magazine.
