This is an illustration (printed both ways) from The Red-Headed League by Arthur Conan Doyle, which appeared in the August 1891 issue of The Strand Magazine. The illustrations are by Sidney Paget, who is known for his illustrators of Sherlock Holmes.
This scene is one of Sherlock Holmes' most iconic poses: he sits hunched over in a chair, his knees close to his nose, a pipe in his mouth, and is deducing the truth behind the case.
The reverse side depicts a visit to Jabez Wilson's pawnbroker and the confirmation of his theory.
