This is an illustration (printed both ways) from The Red-Headed League by Arthur Conan Doyle, which appeared in the August 1891 issue of The Strand Magazine. The illustrations are by Sidney Paget, who is known for his illustrators of Sherlock Holmes.
In this scene, we see Dr. Sherlock Holmes descending into the basement of a bank. The man holding the lantern at the front is Merryweather, the bank's director, and at the back is Peter Jones, a police officer.
