Albert Robida, "Villa of the Flight" "20th Century"
Flying Villa - An Elegant Dream Floating into the Future
A balloon-like roof rests on the shore. A villa suspended in the sky visits the seaside with the elegance of an aristocrat.
This fantastical illustration, Villa of the Flying Boat, painted by Albert Robida in 1883, is a humorous portrayal of the "vacations of the future" imagined by people in the 19th century.
If you go down the stairs from the floating villa (aérochalet), you can see a lively beach scene below. In the distance, perhaps the isolated island of Mont Saint-Michel can be seen. The composition, which seems to oscillate between reality and fantasy, gives a sense of Robida's unique satire and imagination.
This work is one of the illustrations included in the first volume of "The Twentieth Century" (Le Vingtième Siècle), Robida's illustrated adventure through a futuristic world.
