At the end of the 19th century, the moon still belonged to the realm of myth and poetry.
But Albert Robida's imagination goes much further than that...
Carrying the dreams of science and colonization, a future exploration team is quietly preparing to launch.
This illustration, "To the Moon," is the climactic scene that appears at the end of Robida's masterpiece, "The Twentieth Century (Le Vingtième Siècle)."
A huge moon covers the sky as the time for the "first scientific and colonial expedition" to depart arrives.
It is a satirical vision of the future that is typical of Robida, combining scientific romance reminiscent of Jules Verne with irony towards colonial paradoxes.
With highly detailed antique prints and highly structured compositions, he creates a visual world in which the boundaries between fantasy and reality become blurred.
