Paris at Night - A Flying City, a Vision of the Future of Light and Shadow
A lighted tower, a flying boat flying in the night sky,
Police boats and civilian vehicles float silently in the skies of the futuristic city of Paris.
This work, Paris la Nuit, is one of the illustrations for Albert Robida's futuristic science fiction novel Le Vingtième Siècle. In 1883, Robida created a fantastical vision of a panoramic view of the city, including its aerial transportation network at night.
On the right side of the screen is a high-rise tower on which the words "POLICE" and "POMPIERS" can be read, and slightly in the center, what appears to be Notre Dame Cathedral floats quietly, creating a world where reality and imagination intersect.
This delicate woodblock print of a city night view is a unique piece by Robida, combining satire and nostalgia.
